History

Dawes County was established in 1885 and named after Nebraska Governor James W. Dawes. Settlement expanded rapidly with the arrival of the railroad, which helped Chadron develop into a major regional center. The county’s early history is tied to ranching, homesteading, and the Pine Ridge region, which provided timber, grazing land, and natural protection.

Chadron gained national attention in 1893 with the famous Chadron–Chicago Cowboy Race, a 1,000‑mile endurance event that highlighted the frontier spirit of the region. The establishment of Chadron State College in 1911 further shaped the county’s cultural and educational identity.

Dawes County is the recreational center of gravity of the whole US-20 corridor, and holds both Nebraska’s largest state park and its oldest.

Fort Robinson State Park

Soldier Creek Road at US-20, three miles west of Crawford. (308) 665-2900. Over 22,000 acres, making it by far the largest state park in Nebraska. Administratively a Dawes County park, though its western acreage runs into Sioux County.

Three campgrounds. Red Cloud has 74 full-hookup sites — electric, water and sewer at the pad, 30 and 50 amp. Soldier Creek has 77 Electric Plus and 22 basic sites, electric only. The Mare Barn equestrian area has 28 full-hookup and 20 Electric Plus, with stalls and pens. Site counts differ between Game and Parks and the state tourism site; the figures here are Game and Parks’.

The dump-and-fill station is on site, reported at the entrance to the Soldier Creek loop — Red Cloud campers have sewer at the pad and do not need it. Restrooms, showers and drinking water throughout, and coin laundry at the Mare Barn. Showers and water are shut off in winter though the campground stays open and the power stays on. Red Cloud reportedly takes rigs to about 45 feet. Roughly $35 a night at full hookup, plus a park entry permit. Half the electric sites are reservable up to a year ahead on 1-844-637-2757.

Lodging is unusual and worth knowing about: the historic officers’ quarters, built between 1874 and 1909, sleep from two to twenty; the 1909 enlisted men’s quarters is a 22-room lodge; and Comanche Hall sleeps sixty. All have kitchens, baths and linens. Lodging runs mid-April to mid-November.

Sixty miles of hiking trail and twenty of mountain-bike trail, horseback riding, jeep and stagecoach rides, bison cookouts, the Post Playhouse summer theatre, the Fort Robinson History Center and the Trailside Museum of Natural History. Nine ponds and cold-water streams hold rainbow and tiger trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch and black crappie — both a fishing permit and a park entry permit are required.

The Smiley Canyon Scenic Drive is five and a half paved miles, one-way uphill at a seven per cent grade, climbing about 900 feet through the bison pasture. Pronghorn, mule deer and the occasional bighorn. No hiking or cycling in the bison pasture section. Fine for a moderate motorhome; think twice with a long trailer.

Current status: the South Fork Fire burned 39,696 acres just west of the fort from 10 June 2026 and was fully contained on 24 June. The historic complex, lodging, campgrounds and livestock were not damaged, and the park reopened progressively from 16 June. Some activities — stagecoach and trail rides among them — were still suspended pending safety assessment, and the Forest Service closed the Soldier Creek Recreation Area for repair. Check with the park before traveling for a specific activity.

Pine Ridge and the byway

The Pine Ridge National Recreation Area, on Nebraska National Forest ground, is the county’s backcountry — hiking, riding and hunting through ponderosa buttes and canyons quite unlike the rest of the state. US-20 through here is the Bridges to Buttes Byway. Deer, turkey, elk and bighorn sheep all occur in the Pine Ridge; check current Game and Parks seasons and permit draws, as elk and bighorn are tightly limited.
