History

Box Butte County was established in 1886 from part of Dawes County and named after Box Butte, a distinctive butte rising above the surrounding prairie. The arrival of the railroad spurred rapid settlement, with Alliance founded in 1888 as a major Burlington Railroad hub. Agriculture, ranching, and transportation shaped the county’s early development, and Alliance soon became a regional center for trade and services.

Outdoors — Camping, RV, Hunting & Fishing

Box Butte County’s outdoor story is thinner than its reputation suggests, and one correction has to come first. Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area, the reservoir, the dam and the reservoir WMA are all in Dawes County, about nine and a half miles north of Hemingford, just over the county line. The Bureau of Reclamation’s own management plan says the reservoir and WMA are “all within Dawes County.” It is still the nearest big water and worth planning around — just label it correctly.

Box Butte Reservoir SRA (Dawes County), (308) 665-2903 — 2,212 acres with a 1,600-acre lake and about 14 miles of shoreline on the Niobrara, behind a dam built 1941–46 for the Mirage Flats irrigation project. 86 campsites: 60 Electric Plus pads with both 30- and 50-amp, and 26 basic non-electric, two of them ADA. Dump station and shower house: yes — added in an $840,000 project. Drinking water, modern restrooms, fire rings, four shelters, fish-cleaning station, two boat ramps and two docks, all boat types. First-come sites pay at Iron Ranger boxes, cash or check only; reservations 180 days out on 1-844-637-2757. Fishing: northern pike, walleye, channel catfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch and rock bass. The associated WMA (about 355 acres at full pool) is open to whitetail deer, turkey, cottontail, fox squirrel, pheasant, dove, ducks, geese, snipe and rail.

Camping actually inside Box Butte County is all private, and all three options are in Alliance:

• Jeske’s Over The Hill Campground, 2131 County Rd. 59, (308) 762-3763 — right next to Carhenge, full hookups with 50-amp, plenty of fresh water, free Wi-Fi. Be aware the toilets are porta-potties, which matters for a longer stay. Rates reported $13 to $35.
• J & C RV Park, 2491 S Highway 385, (308) 762-3860 — full hookups, 30 and 50 amp, open year round, from about $55 a night, trees on most lots.
• Sunset Motel and RV Park, 1210 E US Highway 2, (308) 762-8660 — listed in RV directories only; call before relying on it.

There is no municipal campground in Alliance or Hemingford that we could confirm, and no confirmed dump station outside the private parks.

Fishing in the county comes down to two small city ponds, both with unusual rules. Laing Lake (10 acres, City of Alliance) is catch-and-release for anyone 16 or older — no harvest, for bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, rainbow trout and yellow perch. The Alliance City Golf Course Pond (half an acre) is open only sunrise to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday, and holds cutthroat, rainbow and tiger trout plus yellow perch. There are no boat ramps. For real fishing, Box Butte Reservoir is the destination.

Hunting. There is no wildlife management area inside Box Butte County — worth saying plainly rather than gesturing at “public land nearby.” That makes Open Fields and Waters walk-in access matter more here than almost anywhere: the 2026–27 Public Access Atlas covers more than 1.3 million publicly accessible acres statewide, of which 471,000 are privately owned OFW ground, and enrolment changes every year. The Managed Access Program, which reserves private-land hunting by date and species, is a second route. Game: mule deer primarily, plus whitetail, pronghorn, ring-necked pheasant on the CRP and grassland, sharp-tailed grouse and prairie chicken on the Sandhills margin, waterfowl on the Niobrara, turkey, dove and cottontail. WMA entry is free and needs no park permit, but a hunt permit and the $25 habitat stamp are required.

Another negative worth stating: no part of the Nebraska National Forest is in Box Butte County. The Pine Ridge Ranger District is in Dawes and Sioux counties, roughly 60 miles north of Alliance.

Carhenge. Built in the summer of 1987 by Jim Reinders and about 35 family members on his late father’s farm north of Alliance on NE-87, and dedicated at the summer solstice that June — a Stonehenge replica in vehicles, all painted gray, in a circle about 96 feet across. Sources disagree on whether it is 38 or 39 cars; count them yourself. The City of Alliance has owned it since October 2013, when the Friends of Carhenge donated it to the citizens — several sources still say the Friends own it, which is out of date. There is a visitor center, The Pit Stop, and a Car Art Reserve of additional vehicle sculptures on the grounds. Around 4,000 people watched the total solar eclipse from here on 21 August 2017.
