Sandhills Nebraska

America's Largest Sand Dune Sea

The Nebraska Sandhills is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in North America — 19,600 square miles of grass-stabilized sand dunes, crystal-clear lakes, and wetlands sitting atop the Ogallala Aquifer. Home to Cherry County, the largest county in Nebraska, this vast region supports over 530,000 beef cattle and some of the most important migratory bird habitat on the continent. Sparsely populated and largely unchanged, the Sandhills offer world-class wildlife viewing, canoeing, and a ranching culture that runs generations deep.

History & Heritage
The Sandhills were among the last regions of Nebraska settled by homesteaders, who quickly discovered the dune country was better suited to ranching than farming. The open range cattle era shaped towns like Valentine and O'Neill, and the ranching culture that took hold in the 1880s remains largely intact today. O'Neill, founded by Irish-American General John O'Neill, celebrates its heritage as the "Irish Capital of Nebraska." The region was also home to DeWitty, one of the largest Black homestead settlements in Nebraska history, located in Cherry County in the early 1900s.

The Niobrara National Scenic River near Valentine is Nebraska's premier canoe and kayak destination, with outfitters offering float trips through canyon country past waterfalls and wildlife.
