Thedford, the county seat of Thomas County, was founded in 1887 with the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and formally incorporated as a village in 1914. Sitting at the junction of U.S. 83 and Nebraska Route 2 deep in the Sandhills, it serves as the small commercial and civic hub for one of Nebraska's most sparsely populated counties.
With 208 residents at the 2020 Census, Thedford is Thomas County's largest community by a wide margin over Halsey, and its shared school co-op with neighboring Dunning reflects the tight, necessarily interdependent nature of small Sandhills county-seat towns.
