Thedford is the county seat of Thomas County, in the Nebraska Sandhills, at the junction of U.S. Route 83 and Nebraska Route 2. It was established in 1887 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to the spot, and it was made the county seat the same year. The name probably came from Thedford in Ontario, Canada. The village incorporated in July 1914.

The country around it explains the size of the town. Homesteaders arrived in numbers after the Kinkaid Act of 1904 opened 640 acre claims, and the county population peaked near 1,773 in 1920, but sandy soil and scarce water defeated most attempts at crop farming. Ranchers bought up the abandoned claims, and by 1940 ranching dominated the local economy. It still does, on operations measured in thousands of acres.

The 2020 census counted 208 residents. The village has a convenience store, two banks, two hotels and a restaurant, along with smaller trades that include photography, custom hat making and a lumber retailer. The Thomas County Historical Museum occupies the former Chester and Ida Paxton home on Court Street and shows relics of Sandhills settlement; admission is free, and it opens Monday, Wednesday and Friday between Memorial Day and Labor Day, or by appointment. The school combines activities with Sandhills, in Dunning, as the Sandhills-Thedford Knights.

Thedford, the county seat of Thomas County, was founded in 1887 with the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and formally incorporated as a village in 1914. Sitting at the junction of U.S. 83 and Nebraska Route 2 deep in the Sandhills, it serves as the small commercial and civic hub for one of Nebraska's most sparsely populated counties.

With 208 residents at the 2020 Census, Thedford is Thomas County's largest community by a wide margin over Halsey, and its shared school co-op with neighboring Dunning reflects the tight, necessarily interdependent nature of small Sandhills county-seat towns.
