About Lindy
Lindy is an unincorporated community in Knox County, in the far north-east corner of Nebraska. Thirteen people lived there at the 2020 census. Nebraska Highway 12 forms the southern edge of the community and runs 12 miles east to Crofton and 15 miles west to Niobrara. The Missouri River and the South Dakota line are about seven miles north. Lindy lies within the Santee Sioux Reservation, which takes in roughly 173 square miles of Knox County along the south bank of the Missouri. The Lindy Country Club, a restaurant and bar, and Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church are both in the community.
History
The townsite was surveyed in 1928, in response to local demand for a nearer shopping and marketing centre. A rumour of a railroad that never arrived helped push the plan along. The name honours the aviator Charles Lindbergh, known as Lucky Lindy after his 1927 flight from New York to Paris. In its better years the town had a barber shop and a theatre.
Lewis and Clark
The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near here on 2 September 1804. A marker at the site notes that the party took natural sand ridges and mounds for old fortifications. A second marker, on the George Shannon Trail, records where Shannon rejoined the expedition after being separated from it. A chainsaw sculpture and wayside marker honouring Shannon were installed in 2002.
