History

Thayer County was established in 1872 and named after John Milton Thayer, a Civil War general and Nebraska political leader. The region grew with the expansion of the railroad and the development of agriculture. Hebron became the county seat and remains a hub of civic life and community pride.

Thayer County, Nebraska — and this ground was the original Jefferson County, laid out in 1856. In 1867 the county to its east was attached and the whole administered as Jefferson; in 1871 the legislature split it back in two, and the western half — this half — was named Thayer, for John Milton Thayer, Civil War general, United States Senator and later Governor of Nebraska. County seat Hebron, established the same year, founded about 1869 by a Disciples of Christ colony and named for the ancient city. Population peaked at 14,775 in 1910 and is near 5,000 today. 203 listings across 11 towns.

Getting there: US-81 runs north and south — the only U.S. north–south route in this tier of counties — and US-136 crosses east and west, with NE-4, 5, 8 and 53. The Little Blue River runs past Hebron, with Big Sandy Creek and Rose Creek the other named streams; ninety percent of the county is farmed. Union Pacific serves it, and Belvidere keeps a train-watching platform. The county borders Washington and Republic counties, Kansas. Central Time.

The towns are in alphabetical order, and that is not a coincidence. When the St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad came through in 1872, the Nebraska Land and Town Company platted its stations alphabetically along the line — Alexandria, Belvidere, Carleton, Davenport, in sequence west to east. Alexandria itself grew by absorbing Meridian, the Jefferson County seat, whose people simply moved when the rails passed them by.

Three things began in this county. Six-man football was invented here — Stephen Epler devised it at Chester in 1934 so that Depression-era small schools could field teams, and the first game was played at Hebron on 27 September 1934 before nearly a thousand people, a combined Hardy–Chester squad against a combined Belvidere–Alexandria team, played to a 19–19 tie as a demonstration for Kansas and Nebraska coaches. The first free flight of a modern hot-air balloon lifted off from the old Bruning Army Air Field on 22 October 1960, when Ed Yost flew three miles in twenty-five minutes in an envelope of his own design with a propane burner of his own invention — every balloon festival in the world traces back to that Thayer County field. And Nebraska’s woman suffrage movement started at Hebron: Erasmus Correll founded the Hebron Journal in 1871 and brought Susan B. Anthony here in 1877 and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1879, and the first permanent woman suffrage association in the state formed in 1879, with more than thirty local organizations following across Nebraska.

For visitors: the World’s Largest Covered Porch Swing stands in Roosevelt Park at Hebron — a 32-foot seat holding roughly twenty-four children or sixteen to eighteen adults, built in 1985, moved to the park in 1991, recognised by the World Record Academy in 2022 — and the beam holding it up is a section of center-pivot irrigation frame from Reinke Manufacturing at Deshler, so a Thayer County irrigation company literally built the thing. The Thayer County Courthouse of 1903, in Indiana limestone and Vermont marble, stands towerless — a tornado in 1953 damaged the tower past saving and it was taken down. The Hebron post office of 1937 is on the National Register and carries a 1939 WPA Federal Art Project mural. Add the 1907 Bruning Opera House, the native-limestone District 17 Rock School of 1873 at Gilead, tours at Reinke, and Chester’s barn quilts — sixty and more of them scattered across the county.

The trails crossed here. The Oregon–California Trail, the Pony Express route and the overland stage road all ran through Thayer County, with visible wagon ruts near Alexandria and the California Trail keeping north of Big Sandy Creek. In 1864 raids struck the ranches and stage stations along the Little Blue, and Fort Butler at Hebron and Fort Kiowa south of Deshler were the posts thrown up in answer. Riders re-run the Pony Express route each June. Out of doors, Alexandria State Recreation Area — the “Alexandria Lakes” — is in this county at the village of Alexandria, whatever the state tourism site says, and the Little Blue NRD’s Bruning Dam sits east of Bruning.
