About Hebron

Hebron is the county seat of Thayer County in southern Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 1,441 residents. The city covers about 1.46 square miles at an elevation near 1,473 feet, and sits at the junction of Highways 81 and 136. The Little Blue River runs through the south side of town, and the Oregon Trail passed just to the north.

History

Hebron was founded about 1869 by a colony of Disciples of Christ, who named it after the ancient city of Hebron. A tornado caused severe damage in 1953. The Hebron post office, built in 1937 under the supervising architect Louis A. Simon, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The porch swing

Roosevelt Park, at Fifth Street and Jefferson Avenue, holds what Hebron claims is the world's largest covered porch swing. It was a volunteer job. Paul O'Callaghan designed and built the wooden seats, and John Davis of Reinke Engineering worked out the steel frame using donated irrigation system parts. The swing was built in 1985 and moved to its present spot in the park in 1991.

Around town

The Thayer County Courthouse stands downtown. The city also has the Arrowhead Garden arboretum, three parks, the Majestic Theatre, a nine-hole golf course and a municipal airport.
