Stanton County is a small agricultural county in northeastern Nebraska, bordered by Wayne County to the north, Cuming County to the east, Platte County to the south, and Madison County to the west. The county seat is Stanton, a quiet community of approximately 1,577 residents that serves as the governmental and commercial hub of the county.

The county was organized in 1862 and named in honor of Edwin McMasters Stanton, Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln. Agriculture — primarily corn, soybeans, and livestock — defines the county's economy and landscape. US Highway 275 is the primary travel corridor through the county, running through the northern part of the county near Pilger.

Stanton County is part of the Northeast Nebraska (Lewis & Clark) region and is surrounded by the communities and counties that define this corner of the Great Plains. The county is notable as the site of the June 2014 twin tornadoes that struck Pilger — one of the most dramatic tornado events in Nebraska history.
