South Yankton, Nebraska
South Yankton is a small unincorporated community in northern Cedar County, Nebraska, situated near the South Dakota border along the Missouri River bluffs. The community takes its name from Yankton, South Dakota — the historic city that served as the first capital of Dakota Territory — which lies directly across the Missouri River to the north. South Yankton occupies the high bluff country of Nebraska's northeastern corner, with sweeping views across the river valley into South Dakota.
Nebraska Highway 12, the Lewis and Clark National Scenic Byway, runs through the northern Cedar County corridor connecting South Yankton to Wynot to the west and to communities in Dixon County to the east. The Wynot post office (ZIP 68774) serves the community.
History
The area around South Yankton has been inhabited for centuries, with the Missouri River at this stretch serving as a major corridor for trade, travel, and settlement by numerous Native American nations. The Yankton Sioux people lived along both banks of the river, and their presence is commemorated in the name of the South Dakota city visible from the Nebraska bluffs. Lewis and Clark camped near this area in August 1804, recording in their journals the beauty of the river valley and the strategic importance of the Yankton crossing. European American settlement of northern Cedar County came in the 1880s, when homesteaders claimed the upland farms and bluff-country properties of the region.
The Missouri River has shaped the history of communities like South Yankton in profound ways. Seasonal flooding, the coming of the railroad to Yankton, and later the construction of Gavins Point Dam upstream at Crofton all influenced the settlement patterns and economic life of northern Cedar County.
