Tryon began in 1890 as a settlement called "McPherson," the original county seat established shortly after McPherson County organized that year. It was relocated and renamed Tryon in 1892; the name's origin is disputed among local sources, variously attributed to colonial-era governor William Tryon, a North Platte judge, or a promoter's wordplay on "trying on" to build a town.

Tryon is an unincorporated community and Census-designated place — McPherson County has no incorporated municipalities at all — but has served as the county seat since its founding. Population: 107 (2020 Census), down from 157 in 2010. Its ZIP code is 69167. The McPherson County Courthouse, built in 1925-26 to replace an original 1890 sod courthouse, houses the McPherson County Historical Society museum. The 1904 Kinkaid Act, which allowed full-section homesteads in the Sandhills, drove the county's population from 517 in 1900 to a peak of 2,470 in 1910, when Tryon was a major regional hub.
