Historical Background

Chambers traces its roots to 1880–81, when George Eckley and his son-in-law John Alderson filed the area’s first claims along the south fork of the Elkhorn River. In 1883, Rufus Wry opened a mercantile store three miles southeast of Alderson’s claim, and when a mail route was established the following year, the resulting settlement was named Chambers — in honor of B. F. Chambers, registrar of the U.S. land office at Niobrara — by frontier editor W. D. Mathews. By the end of 1884 the young town already had a retail store, a harness shop, and a hotel with a livery barn, with Wry’s store doubling as the post office and drawing settlers to the area.

In 1886, the community organized its first Harvest Home Festival, a celebration that grew into the South Fork Fair by 1892 and, in 1935, became the Holt County Fair — the same fair Chambers hosts to this day every August. Ten area churches were established in the town’s early decades, seven of which continued serving the community for generations. Chambers also earned an unlikely claim to fame in the 1930s: local histories record that, per capita, the village had more private airplanes than any other town or city in the world.

Today Chambers remains a village of hardworking ranch and farm families in the southern part of Holt County, anchored by its community center, park, and the Holt County Fairgrounds that draw visitors from across the region every summer.
