Historical Background

Atkinson's origins involved two false starts. Father Fanning, a missionary priest, once considered founding a mission town on the site, and Colonel John Atkinson later staked out a fully surveyed townsite with plotted streets and lots -- yet not a single building was ever built on it, since the ground proved too low and swampy for construction. The town that endured grew instead around a small store established in 1877 near the same spot, which storekeeper Frank Bitney soon took over. When the railroad's survey crew ran their preliminary line nearby, Bitney offered forty acres of his own land to help secure the route, then named the resulting town after Colonel Atkinson in honor of the man whose own townsite plans had failed.

The families who settled around Bitney's store in the late 1870s came mostly from Ireland, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania: the O'Connells, Donnellys, Carberrys, Alworths, Barretts, Davises, Baumans, Boehmes and Dexters among them, staking claims along the Elkhorn River. Surveyor John O'Dempsey Nightengale, who arrived from Minnesota in 1878, laid out not only Atkinson but also Stuart, Emmet, and part of O'Neill. His family's frame home -- nicknamed the "Nightengale Castle" for being the area's first house not built of sod or logs -- doubled for years as the community's schoolhouse, dance hall, and gathering place for early Catholic Mass, out of which St. Joseph's parish eventually grew.

Bitney filed his official townsite on August 7, 1880, and the railroad reached town the following year, touching off a construction boom of churches, hotels, livery stables, and homes. Confident local merchants billed their young community as "the STAR CITY of the Upper Elkhorn Valley" on their letterhead envelopes. By the early twentieth century Atkinson had grown into a lively trading center, drawing farm and ranch families into town on Saturday nights for shopping, band concerts, and socializing along a Main Street lined with stores, saloons, and a skating rink Bitney built in 1884.

Atkinson carries that trading-post heritage forward today as a full-service hub along the U.S. Highway 20 corridor, anchoring the central stretch of Holt County between Stuart and O'Neill for the ranching families, travelers, and Sandhills visitors who pass through.
