Omaha was founded in 1854 by settlers from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and incorporated in 1857. The city's name comes from the Omaha people, meaning "upstream people." Omaha served as a critical 19th-century transportation hub -- construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad began there in 1866 -- and the Union Stockyards, established in 1883, grew into the world's largest meatpacking center by the 1950s. The city hosted the Trans-Mississippi Exposition world's fair in 1898, drawing more than 2 million visitors, and has long attracted waves of immigrants, including Irish, German, Polish, Italian, Czech, Mexican, and more recently Sudanese and other African communities.
