Schuyler is the county seat of Colfax County, in the Platte Valley about two miles north of the river. The Union Pacific renamed its Shell Creek Station here in 1870, and the city, like the county, carries the name of Schuyler Colfax, a former vice president of the United States. The Oregon and Mormon trail corridor, the transcontinental railroad and later the Lincoln Highway all ran through this stretch of the valley; U.S. Highway 30 and Nebraska Highway 15 meet in town.
For a short period in 1870 Schuyler was the western railhead of the Texas cattle trade and served as the first cow town in Nebraska, handling tens of thousands of cattle before the shipping point moved farther west. Meatpacking still defines the local economy. The Cargill beef plant, operating since 1968, is by far the largest employer, with roughly two thousand workers. That work has reshaped the city: the 2020 census counted 6,547 residents, about seventy percent Hispanic or Latino, with a median age under thirty and more than a third of the population under eighteen.
The building most worth stopping for is the Oak Ballroom in the city park, put up by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s to a design by the local architect Emiel Christensen. It was built from native oak and from stone salvaged out of the ruins of a local milling company, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It still functions as an event hall.
