About Brownson
Brownson is an unincorporated community in Cheyenne County, in western Nebraska. It sits about seven miles west of Sidney, just off U.S. Highway 30 and a mile north-east of Interstate 80, at around 4,210 feet above sea level. Potter lies to the west and Gurley to the north-east.
History
The post office here was established on 2 March 1887 under the name Bronson, without the W. In June 1895 the name was changed to Brownson. The community was named for a former general freight agent of the Union Pacific Railroad. A state gazetteer of 1890 records a general store, a justice of the peace and a postmaster. Brownson was a flag station on the line, and was still listed as a station in 1917.
What is left
Not much. The population was down to about twenty people by 2000. One building is worth a look: a small single-story structure carrying an unusually tall false front, the top of it more than twenty feet above the level grade.

The community's post office opened in 1887 under the spelling "Bronson" before being officially corrected to "Brownson" in 1895. By the early 2000s it had faded to a near-ghost town with only a handful of residents, though a few structures — including an old brick schoolhouse — survived into the mid-2000s. Brownson sits near the site of the World War II-era Sioux Ordnance Depot, once connected by a 352-foot bridge built in 1942.
