About Thatcher
Thatcher, also spelled Thacher, is the site of a former railroad station and post office about 6 miles southeast of Valentine in Cherry County, on the east side of the Niobrara River. Nothing of it is known to remain.
History
The Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad reached Thacher, on the east side of the Niobrara, in the fall of 1882, and cattle were shipped from here that fall, before the tracks crossed the river to Valentine in 1883. It was named for James M. Thatcher, the U.S. post trader at Fort Niobrara. The post office ran from 1884 to 1889, and the name still appeared on the 1912 county map.
