About Irwin
Irwin is the site of a former post office and railroad point in far western Cherry County, about 13 miles west-southwest of Merriman and 14 miles east-northeast of Gordon, in the US 20 corridor. Nothing of the settlement is known to remain. The History Nebraska Opening the Sandhills marker is on US 20 a few miles west.
History
Irwin was named for Bennett Irwin, who started the first cattle ranch in the surrounding country, and it appears in the Chicago & North Western's 1908 book of place names. Its post office ran from 1900 to 1954, and it gave its name to a precinct.
