About Eli
Eli is an unincorporated community in western Cherry County, about a mile north of US 20 between Merriman (11 miles west) and Cody (12 miles east). It is a turnoff and a few homes on the old railroad line. Conley Flats Cemetery is about 5 miles south-southeast. Eli is on Mountain Time.
History
Eli was a stop on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad, later the Chicago & North Western. It was named for railroad man Daniel Webster Hitchcock, whose nickname was "Get-there-Eli." The 1895 atlas shows rail service but no post office; the post office ran from 1909 to 1967. A lumberyard operated here from 1925 to 1931. The railroad was abandoned in the 1990s.
