Enders, Nebraska
Enders is an unincorporated community in Chase County, Nebraska, with a population of 37 at the 2020 census. It was established in 1890 at its present site, after relocating from an earlier location about two miles to the east-southeast, and is named for Peter Enders, a local pioneer rancher.
History
Enders’ post office was established on August 26, 1890, closed in 1893, and was reestablished in 1907. The community was among the first in western Nebraska to receive electrical power, via an early irrigation-and-power dam on Frenchman Creek operated by Ralph Grosbach. That original dam site was later submerged when the modern Enders Dam was built on Frenchman Creek between 1947 and 1951 under the Bureau of Reclamation’s Missouri Basin Program. The community of Enders now sits on the north shore of the resulting Enders Reservoir, and Enders Reservoir State Recreation Area — offering fishing, hunting, and boating — is the area’s main recreational draw today.
