Saint Helena, Nebraska
Saint Helena is a small incorporated village in northern Cedar County, Nebraska. Situated along or near Nebraska Highway 12 — the Lewis and Clark National Scenic Byway — the community occupies the bluff country above the Missouri River valley. Like Wynot and other communities along the NE-12 corridor, Saint Helena grew as part of the broader agricultural and parish community that developed in northeastern Nebraska during the homestead era.
The village takes its name from Saint Helena of Constantinople, reflecting the Catholic heritage that shaped many communities in this part of Nebraska. Czech, German, and other Central European immigrant families who settled Cedar County brought with them strong religious traditions, and churches often gave their names to surrounding communities and townships.
History
Saint Helena was established in the late nineteenth century as Cedar County's population expanded outward from Hartington and other early centers. The Missouri River bluffs of northern Cedar County attracted settlers who found the terrain similar to their European homelands — rolling hills, timbered draws, and rich bottomland soils. The community developed around a church and school, the twin anchors of rural Nebraska village life in this era.
Nebraska Highway 12 and its predecessor routes connected Saint Helena to the broader economy of northeastern Nebraska, linking it to Wynot, Crofton, and Niobrara to the west and to communities in Dixon County to the east.
