Weeping Water is a city in Cass County, Nebraska, platted in 1867, incorporated as a village in 1870 and as a city in 1888. Its population was 1,029 at the 2020 census, down from a peak of about 1,350 in 1890.

History

The city’s name derives from the Otoe and Omaha word "Nigahoe," meaning roughly "rustling water," which early French traders rendered as "eau qui pleure" — water that weeps. A popular legend about grieving women that is often attached to the name actually traces back to an 1871 poem rather than any attested oral tradition. Weeping Water is best known for its limestone quarry, still operated today by Martin Marietta, and the city celebrates its quarrying heritage each June with "Limestone Day." The Weeping Water Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is anchored by the Heritage House Museum.
