Louisville, Nebraska
Louisville is an incorporated city in Cass County, Nebraska, with a population of 1,319 at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1857; the exact origin of its name is uncertain, with local accounts pointing variously to a founder’s fur-trading company, the city of Louisville, Kentucky, or an early mill operator named Lewis.
History
In 1863, Capt. J.T.A. Hoover discovered deposits of white clay near Louisville and went on to build a pottery works, incorporated in 1878 as the Louisville Stone Ware Company. The Burlington Railroad reached the town in 1870, followed by the Missouri Pacific in 1881, and the Huber and Sons flour mill opened in 1876. Louisville’s defining modern industry arrived in 1927, when the Ash Grove Cement Company opened a cement plant on former quarry land; the operation continues today across roughly 4,000 acres, producing around one million tons of cement annually.
