Eagle, Nebraska

Eagle is a village in Cass County, Nebraska, with a population of 1,065 at the 2020 census, making it one of the county’s larger communities. It was platted in 1886 along the Missouri Pacific Railroad in the southwestern corner of the county, near the Lancaster County line.

History

Eagle’s name is generally attributed to wild eagles seen by early settlers in the area; some local accounts also mention an earlier, less-documented name, "Sunlight." An 1899 local newspaper described Eagle as "an energetic and hustling little city," reflecting the town’s rail-era growth and ambition. Eagle sits along the MoPac Trail, a rail-to-trail path following the former Missouri Pacific right-of-way, and is home to Eagle Raceway, a dirt racetrack that has hosted weekly races each spring through fall for decades.
