Shelton, Nebraska

Shelton is a village straddling the Buffalo–Hall county line, in south-central Nebraska. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 1,034 residents.

History

The settlement traces back to 1858, when Mormon pioneer Joseph Johnson established “Wood River Centre” at the site. In April 1860, Johnson launched The Huntsman’s Echo, believed to be the first newspaper published west of Omaha. The Union Pacific Railroad reached the community in 1866, and in 1873 it was renamed Shelton — after Nathan Shelton, a Union Pacific Railroad auditor — to avoid confusion with another “Wood River” community to the east. The village was formally incorporated in 1882.

Shelton sits at approximately 40.778°N, 98.729°W, at an elevation of 2,018 feet, and covers about 0.97 square miles. The village lies along U.S. Route 30 — the historic Lincoln Highway — with its downtown situated near the banks of the Wood River, west of Grand Island.

Notable Features

Shelton’s Carnegie Library was funded in 1913, and the community has long been served by a local newspaper, The Shelton Clipper (formerly The Shelton Clarion). The village was featured on CBS’s On the Road in 1983.

Community

Shelton’s population has declined gradually over the past two decades — 1,140 in 2000, 1,059 in 2010, and 1,034 in 2020 — while remaining one of the larger towns in the Buffalo County countryside outside Kearney.
