Amherst, Nebraska

Amherst is a village in Buffalo County, in south-central Nebraska. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 201 residents.

History

Amherst was platted in 1890 when the Kearney and Black Hills branch of the Union Pacific Railroad was built through the area, replacing an earlier post office called Greendale that had served area homesteaders since 1879. The new townsite was named after Amherst College in Massachusetts and was formally incorporated as a village in 1894. Like many railroad towns across central Nebraska, Amherst grew up around grain elevators and small businesses serving the surrounding farm community. Its population peaked at 262 residents in 1930 before settling into the gradual decline typical of small agricultural villages across the Great Plains.

Location & Access

Amherst sits along Nebraska Highway 40 in south-central Buffalo County, roughly 15 to 20 miles southeast of Kearney, the county seat. U.S. Highway 30 passes about 15 miles to the north. The village is served by a Union Pacific freight line, though no passenger rail service remains.

Amherst is close to several other Buffalo County communities: Miller lies to the north, Pleasanton to the east, and Riverdale to the southeast along Highway 40. Kearney, the largest city in the region and home to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, is the primary destination for shopping, healthcare, and other services.

Economy & Community

Agriculture is the backbone of Amherst’s economy, with corn, soybeans, and wheat grown in the irrigated farmland of the Platte and South Loup River valleys, supplemented by cattle and hog operations. The village is governed by a five-member board of trustees and is protected by an all-volunteer fire department. Trinity Lutheran Church serves the local faith community.

Education

Amherst is home to Amherst Public Schools, a PK-12 district serving the village and surrounding rural area. The district’s small class sizes and active FFA and athletics programs reflect the tight-knit character of the community.
