History

Butler County was created in 1856 and organized in 1868. It was named after William Orlando Butler, a U.S. congressman and general in the Mexican–American War. Early settlement was shaped by Czech, German, and Irish immigrants, who established farms, churches, and schools across the fertile Platte River valley. David City, founded in 1873, became the county seat and remains the cultural and economic hub. The county’s history is preserved by the Butler County Historical Society and the Depot Museum in David City.
